LONGS, S.C. | The signature hole at <a href="https://www.mbn.com/courses/long-bay-golf-club">Long Bay Golf Club</a> just outside Myrtle Beach is a remarkable piece of real estate.
On No. 10, the vast majority of us are going to tee off from 315 yards or less from the green. But how Jack Nicklaus crafted the Par 4 &#8211; tuning fork waste bunker hugging both sides of the fairway, additions of natural grasses sprinkled amid the sand and an elevated green &#8211; give drone photographers the type of overhead shots that leave us salivating for more.
What Nicklaus didn’t do, however, was put all his stock into that one hole.
The other 17 at <a href="https://www.mbn.com/courses/long-bay-golf-club">Long Bay</a> have desirable traits equally impressive in their own ways. And while we may not be putting any of them on brochures, necessarily, they provide that bump we love to see over and over again.
These three should be earmarked &#8211; then experienced firsthand.
NO. 1, PAR 4, 368 YARDS (top photo)
Nicklaus’ approach to course design is famous for letting players ease into what is going to develop into more difficult holes. He did that on his starter at Long Bay completely unlike what we see anywhere along the Grand Strand. Presumably, most of us aren’t hitting our drivers dead center right off the bat. Your safety net on No. 1 comes in the form of a split fairway that is actually in the shape of a fishhook. So, if you hook it left (for righties), it’s going to take an awfully bad shot to miss that extra short grass. The best part is that most folks are still going to have a shot at the green in regulation without hitting it out of the rough.

Consider this your test run of sorts for No. 10. The fourth hole plays slightly longer, yes, but there is a bump-and-run zone for anyone who falls short of the green on the second shot but can stay to the left of the fairway. If that sounds like a big ask, consider that a slight dogleg left actually funnels you away from the right-side bunker that rides the entirety of the fairway (roughly twice of the side of the one that goes up the left). It’s the No. 1 handicap hole on the course for a reason, so taking your time here isn’t a bad idea. Getting it out of the way with a par or bogey is your confidence building moving forward.

Park an island green midway through the back nine and you get our attention. And trust, us, with this relatively short distance, you’re gonna want to have already found your rhythm. The green itself is surrounded by a modified rough that prevents some of those roll offs. It won’t stop all of them from falling into the drink, but maybe enough to give you a short punch onto the putting surface. Either way, have a playing partner keep the camera phone ready to go, because if you plunk one down dead center or stick the flag, you’ll be bragging about it for years to come and will want evidence.
