“A lot of people who come here mention Jack,” head professional Brandon Mensinger said. “They want to take their picture with the statue out front.”
In this case, he’s talking about Jack Nicklaus. One of the true legends of the game was really just coming into his architectural element when he and his company laid out Long Bay in 1988. In the nearly three decades since it opened, the course has proved its mettle, both in terms of a rigid design that makes players think and the ability to provide varying opinions as to which should be considered the signature hole.
There’s the par-four No. 10, of course, where an oversized waste bunker hugs both sides of the fairway before coming together in front of an offset green. A few holes later, the island green par three is just as visually stunning. It’s about the best problem a course can have, and something that more than offsets the bit of distance from the heart of the area to another of Nicklaus’ gem.
