<p>In fact, even the youngest of the bunch, <a href="https://www.mbn.com/course/founders-club">Founders Club</a>, was an overlay track atop one that initially opened in 1966. Yet, with a refreshed name, what was formally referred to as the Waccamaw Golf Trail is giving visitors who’ve long known these courses reason to appreciate them again.</p>

<p>We’re going to go one step further.</p>

<p>Six undersold reasons to head to the trail can only be appreciated in person. There’s no way to replicate them virtually or pay them justice, even in stories such as this one.</p>

<p><strong>REPPING ONLY THE SOUTH END</strong><br>Between Wedgefield Country Club (Porter Gibson/Bob Toski), <a href="https://www.mbn.com/course/caledonia-golf-and-fish-club">Caledonia Golf &amp; Fish Club</a> and <a href="https://www.mbn.com/course/true-blue">True Blue Golf Club </a>(Mike Strantz), <a href="https://www.mbn.com/course/blackmoor-golf-club">Blackmoor</a> (Gary Player) and <a href="https://www.mbn.com/course/tradition-golf-club">Tradition Golf Club</a> (Ron Garl), Hammock Coast is home to architects who either didn’t touch another course in the area or &#8211; in the case of Strantz &#8211; didn’t get a design credit. Either way, it adds significant uniqueness to the South Strand.</p>

<p><strong>AN AUDIBLE FOR PLAYER</strong><br>The sixth hole at Gary Player’s lone signature design in the area, Blackmoor, was affected by growth. S.C. 707 needed to be widened and playing a 400-yard Par 4 in such a slender fairway was no longer feasible. Drivers tend to get a little peeved when a slice drinks off the hood of their car. So, the course changed it to a Par 3, added a hefty green side bunker and changed it to a Par 3. It’s a look considerably few have seen yet, as the renovations were only recently completed.</p>

<p><strong>THE GATOR</strong><br>For all the reasons we could give you to play <a href="https://www.mbn.com/course/tournament-player-club">TPC of Myrtle Beach</a>, one few talk about is how at home a gator is most times of the year on the finishing hole. Up the left hand side, next to the large pond midway up the approach to the green on No. 18, there’s a good chance you’re going to see him. He’s affected shot selection and even a few decisions to leave a ball for dead over the years. He ain’t no baby gator, either. <em>(TPC 18th pictured right)</em></p>

<p><strong>HISTORY LESSONS GALORE</strong><br>Litchfield was the very first course to open in Pawleys Island. <a href="https://www.mbn.com/course/willbrook-plantation">Willbrook’s</a> property is a tribute to the not-so-glorious past it once encapsulated prior to there even being a United States of America. And in the modern era, <a href="https://www.mbn.com/course/wachesaw-east-golf-club">Wachesaw East</a> and TPC of Myrtle Beach have hosted more professional events than the rest of the area combined. The reasons are different, but the history can’t be ignored. <em>(Willbrook&#8217;s 5th &amp; 6th holes top photo)</em></p>

<p><strong>TRAFFIC MIRAGE</strong><br>A drive from Myrtle Beach to Charleston between Spring Break and Labor Day might tell you otherwise thanks to U.S. 17’s primary link between the two. But make no mistake; the lack of hotels on the south end means the courses down this way are much less likely to be jammed to the gills in terms of the tee sheets. We’re guessing you’d rather spend a few more minutes in your car than on the course waiting for the group in front of you to hit.</p>

<p><strong>EXCELLENT USE OF SAND</strong><br>As the Waccamaw River cut more and more into the South end, creatively finding ways to hydrate courses while not over saturating the soil beneath all the green grass led to even more creativity. All the while, design teams needed to make these tracks stand out from the ones more centrally located to Myrtle Beach. That often led to sand. True Blue and Founders Club lead the way, but many of the rest of the bunch have made it count in pretty sweet fashion, too.</p>
