<p>Between Labor Day and mid-November &#8211; when outsiders are flocking to the area for our courses and not our beaches &#8211; traffic calms significantly. U.S. 501 is usable again, and 17 isn’t a potential daily log jam from the airport to the southern tip of Pawleys Island.</p>

<p>That’s right. It’s the perfect time for you to check out some of the courses dotting the outer edges of the Grand Strand. The distance travelled to these tracks doesn’t change. But the amount of time getting there certainly does.</p>

<p><strong><a href="https://www.mbn.com/course/burning-ridge-golf-club">BURNING RIDGE GOLF CLUB</a>, CONWAY</strong><br>Located just off 501 on the eastern edge of Conway’s postal zone, Burning Ridge was once a 36-hole facility that lost some of its play due to the housing boom that has taken over Carolina Forest. The reduction to 18 holes was accompanied by a softening of the course to remove some trees and bunkers and what remains is an everyday type of course. Most first-time visitors can score well here.</p>

<p><strong><a href="https://www.mbn.com/course/founders-club">FOUNDERS CLUB OF PAWLEYS ISLAND</a></strong><br>Nearly two-decades since it’s rebranding and reopening, Founders Club is a sand-heavy track that benefits from falling in southern Pawleys Island. On most days, it’s not getting the type of walk-in foot traffic as some of the others along the primary portion of the Strand, meaning tee times are going to be plentiful most days and the on-course logjams aren’t prevalent. What’s more, it’s just a dramatically different looking course than most in the area. <em>(Founders Club top photo)</em></p>

<p><strong><a href="https://www.mbn.com/course/meadowlands-golf-club">MEADOWLANDS GOLF CLUB</a>, CALABASH</strong><br>For those who don’t mind a quick drive, Meadowlands makes the dip into North Carolina more than worth it. This playable design encompasses freshwater lakes and plenty of the border belts’ most notable natural environmental factors. It was a joint effort by Willard Bird and David Johnson, allowing the two designers opportunities to bounce ideas off each other throughout the process. The greens are big and attackable and ready for your best shot.</p>

<p><strong><a href="https://www.mbn.com/course/long-bay-golf-club">LONG BAY GOLF CLUB</a>, LONGS</strong><br>The 1988 Jack Nicklaus design at Pawleys Plantation wasn’t the Golden Bear’s only track that opened that year. In Longs, Long Bay was a sister project that he worked on simultaneously and unveiled at basically the same time. Nicklaus got creative with tree lines and bunkering here, meaning it’s going to hold some of his traditional difficulty level. However, it’s also a simply beautiful course that doesn’t get some of the recognition it deserves simply because of its location.</p>

<p><strong><a href="https://www.mbn.com/course/shaftesbury-glen">SHAFTESBURY GLEN GOLF &amp; FISH CLUB</a>, CONWAY</strong><br>Shaftesbury could argue that it is the Grand Strand’s most remote course. There are others further away from the beach. But, near the intersection of 905 and SC 22, it’s certainly one of the more buried. This Clyde Johnston layout has been touched up in recent years and will surprise players who have given the course some time between rounds. At the same time, the course still has some of its big fairways and regulation-reachable holes.</p>
