Yet, we have no problem reminding you why you need to come back.</p>

<p>Jack Nicklaus didn’t design but a handful of fully public courses in South Carolina, and two of them are right here on South Carolina’s Grand Strand. Still, for someone staying on the north end, a trek to Pawleys Plantation Golf &amp; Country Club could be considered a haul, especially if you’re using a ride share.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.mbn.com/course/long-bay-golf-club">Long Bay</a>, meanwhile, is mere minutes from the heart of hotel-heavy North Myrtle Beach and bevy of AirBnBs in Little River where many of our out-of-town players are resting their heads during their golf vacation. Ergo, playing a Nicklaus track is easy to sell to your buddies. </p>

<p>While their is the occasional spattering of homes on the outskirts of the course, one of Long Bay’s best draws is how it feels like it’s out in the country. You’re not going to see a hotel while playing here, nor are you going to feel overwhelmed on a tee shot from cars zipping by on a highway.</p>

<p>No, the holes here are far enough removed from S.C. Highway 9 that you’re going to forget how accessible this course is one you hit the tee box on No. 1. And from there, all you’re staring at is pure, unadulterated golf until you hit the clubhouse at the turn. Rinse and repeat on the back nine and take advantage of surroundings only broken up by the birds and breeze.</p>

<p>Play some courses, and it’s going to start feeling repetitive, if not boring. You’re never going to say that about your landing areas off the tee at Long Bay.</p>

<p>No. 1 has a fairway in the shape of a fish hook. No. 3 has a bunker just off the fairway hidden by a crook in the good stuff. No. 4 squeezes you with mirrored waste bunkers running up either side. No. 6 looks like it was laid out by someone designing a luge track.</p>

<p>And that’s only the first third of the course. Variety off the tee is the name of the game at Long Bay. It was meant to prevent anyone from thinking this course was too easy. And, in retrospect, it keeps players on their toes.</p>

<p>OK, yes, <a href="https://www.mbn.com/course/long-bay-golf-club">Long Bay does</a> include an island green (No. 13, 123 yards, Par 3). That doesn’t mean anyone is going to think this a water-rich track. It’s quite the opposite.</p>

<p>The first real instance of the wet stuff pops up on the Par 3 fifth. And barring a massive mishit, it’s there for visual and irrigation purposes, not anything that’s going to impact your shot on this short shot into the green.</p>

<p>That’s the norm, as most players are going to have in-play water threaten shots on as few as four-five holes. It’s not unheard of for someone to show up here and finish with the same ball he or she started with &#8211; even if the scorecard doesn’t look the way that person might want it to at the end of the round.</p>
