Given a lack of distance combined with beautifully maintained terrain and a stellar background, it&rsquo;s of little surprise that the SouthCreek Course at Myrtle Beach National has found itself honored by voting panels recognizing top rounds for women and seniors.
But typecasting SouthCreek as anything but a solid, all-inclusive track is a disservice simply because it weaves its way through the pre-existing forest the property calls home.&nbsp;
&ldquo;That&rsquo;s a shotmaker&rsquo;s course there. You have to play the ball differently,&rdquo; first assistant professional Brian Lewis said. &ldquo;You don&rsquo;t have to hit a driver every hole. It&rsquo;s a thinker&rsquo;s course.&rdquo;
Sage advice, especially starting off the back nine. The par-5 beauty requires a straight and steady drive off the tee onto a slim fairway. Those choosing to risk putting everything into the driver and who succeed in getting enough of the right kind of distance up the right side then may have an opportunity to cut the corner of a dogleg around a pond onto the green. But as most find, it&rsquo;s not the smart play; nor is it the necessary one.
As most will find, reaching nearly all of the greens in regulation is a matter of strategy, not brute strength.

One of the more recent area courses to be given 4.5 stars by Golf Digest for &ldquo;Places to Play,&rdquo; the West Course at Myrtle Beach National is a fantastic mix of just the right amount of distance and doglegs, sand and water.
Much like its big brother, King&rsquo;s North, West is an Arnold Palmer design that cuts through the Carolina Forest section of Myrtle Beach. Playing at 6,100 yards for most and as long as 6,800 yards from the back tees, it also utilizes a house-free, gimmick-free approach to the game.
&ldquo;It&rsquo;s a very playable golf course,&rdquo; first assistant professional Brian Lewis said. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s not tricked up. You don&rsquo;t have things hiding around the corner on you.&rdquo;
The par 4s here aren&rsquo;t overbearing, and the par 3s &#8211; including a rare one on No. 18 &#8211; aren&rsquo;t overly encumbered by bunkers.
Before you get to the finisher, though, West gives you one more crack at a hitting a successful driver on No. 17. The par 5 doglegs left around a tree line, but not before some considerable distance. Clear the edge of those pines, and you&rsquo;re looking at as little as 200-yards straight into the Mini Verde Bermuda green.

King&rsquo;s North at Myrtle Beach National is one of the area&rsquo;s most decorated courses, having earned Golf Digest&rsquo;s &ldquo;Places to Play&rdquo; 4.5 Star honors each year for more than a decade after forcing it&rsquo;s way into the publication&rsquo;s &ldquo;America&rsquo;s 100 Greatest Public Courses&rdquo; list in 2004.
It&rsquo;s an upward trend that started in 1996 upon Arnold Palmer&rsquo;s touch-up and the subsequent two decades of top-end golf.
&ldquo;It&rsquo;s a great design,&rdquo; first assistant professional Brian Lewis said. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s got Arnold&rsquo;s personal touch on it. He came out and did the re-design itself. &hellip; It&rsquo;s a special course. it&rsquo;s got a beautiful design.&rdquo;
The course&rsquo;s signature holes could also be considered one of the Grand Strand&rsquo;s signature holes. The par-5, No. 6 &#8211; affectionately known as &ldquo;The Gambler&rdquo; &#8211; includes an island fairway to the left of the safer stretch. Players who can reach the back half of that island then have a manageable second shot onto the green. Make both, and you&rsquo;re putting for eagle.
Those who don&rsquo;t get that first shot far enough and still press the issue, or those who miss the island altogether, come to understand why Kenny Rogers lent the title of one of his most famous songs to this hole.
