MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. | Max Morgan has noticed a difference in the two years since he oversaw major renovations at the <a href="https://www.mbn.com/courses/myrtlewood-golf-club-pinehills">PineHills Course at Myrtlewood Golf Club</a>. It&#8217;s an attitude change, really.
“The boys working the bag drop and the pro shop now, they love it. The golfers are happy,” said Morgan, the Vice President of Agronomy for the Founders Group International. “When the golfers are happy, it makes it easy to come to work.”
The reason can be traced back to an all-important detail.
In the summer of 2018, the ownership group shut down the high-traffic course for two months and spent a chunk of change on what was deemed a 20-year difference maker. PineHills’s greens were updated with Sunday Burmudagrass. They were also reshaped and extended back to their original dimensions &#8211; an increase of some 15-20 percent on each putting surface.
The course also installed approximately 23 acres worth of Fescue grass to accent the outlying areas of several holes, something that has implemented a visual appeal. “I think it adds a whole lot of character the golf course,” Morgan said. “It’s a seasonal thing, so sometimes it looks unmowed, and other times it’s mowed. I think it sets it apart. I like the Fescue a whole lot.”
The crown jewel of the renovation project, however, was those greens.The new dimensions means that players have more room for error while attacking the pin. Miss it by a few more feet than you like, and chances are you’re still putting. That was evident almost immediately after they were unveiled in September of 2018.
They carried their form all the way through 2019 and right on into 2020. Hence, the happy players.
Now, factor in that the Sunday Bermudagrass shows its worth, and it only gets better. Below-average putters will improve their capabilities, and pretty good players will have opportunities to knock in a 25 footer while making it look easy. The Sunday rolls fast and firm, and the grass itself makes green reading a touch easier &#8211; if for no other reason that the surfaces were touched up some before it was laid.
In short, <a href="https://www.mbn.com/courses/myrtlewood-golf-club-pinehills">PineHills</a> has become a putter’s dream.
“The greens are excellent,” Morgan said. “We love the Sunday. It seems to do everything we want it to do and it’s good looking.” And it’s keeping players happy.
