<p>I’ve spent enough time on Pete Dye and P.B. Dye courses over the years to know the stereotypes from those two men are based in fact.<br>They were hired to design top-notch courses, and they delivered with the best of them.<br>What those courses have also delivered is a mantra of earning what you get. Good, bad or ugly, <a href="https://www.mbn.com/course/prestwick-country-club">Prestwick</a> falls right in line. It’s part of the reason it offers up six sets of tees.<br>The blacks chime in at an intimidating 7,086 yards, while the whites still measure 6,347. And if you’re a little unsure of your game, there’s not shame in moving up to the greens (5,863).<br>Even if you elect to taper off some of the distance, we’re going to light a beacon of sorts for three holes you need to be ready for. This group is the next level of difficult, where I’ll readily admit I’ve put up some really bad numbers. I’m going to share some of those with you so my embarrassment can help you get into the right mind space.</p>

<p><strong>NO. 9, PAR 5, 486 YARDS</strong><br>This is one of those times where I really went shankopotomus on a hole.</p>

<p>How bad was it? Two trips to <a href="https://www.mbn.com/course/prestwick-country-club">Prestwick</a> ago, I put a whopping nine down as I was preparing to hit the turn. This Par 5 somehow managed to feel much longer than the 486 listed yards from the white. That’s thanks to the large pond that runs up the entirety of the left hand side and the mounding up the right.</p>

<p>The complete package prevents most of us from getting a good poke off the tee. And hitting a 3- or 5-wood on the second shot isn’t exactly advised either. The good news is I learned my lesson on the ensuing trip.</p>

<p>I shortened up with a 5-wood off the tee instead of driver, got a solid 210 yards into the good stuff, then hit a five iron to about 120 yards and pitched up from there. I did this specifically to avoid the hellacious bunker complex on the right side of the green.</p>

<p>It didn’t even matter that I three putted for a bogey. I was thrilled with shaving off three strokes.</p>

<p><strong>NO. 14, PAR 4, 409 YARDS</strong><br>Let’s talk about tree placement, shall we? While the first 320 or so yards of this Par 4 present their fair share of trouble spots, I’d really like to take a buzzsaw to the tree offset to the front left of the green. I swear the damn thing has magnets in it.</p>

<p>On more than one occasion, my ball has hooked to the grass surrounding it. News flash: This isn’t where you want to be.</p>

<p>The fairway that steadily decreases to a runway up to the green is sacrificed in the name of that tree and the rough. That’s a problem, since the green runs behind it. That means anyone who doesn’t favor the right side is going to flirt with what feels like a penalty stroke.</p>

<p>The dogleg left chasing a waste bunker was one thing. The thick tree line at the bend was another. The trees at the far end of the elbow were yet another. The downright evil final 150 or so yards were just mean.</p>

<p>Two oversized bunkers to the right of the green (where you’re almost certainly lined up to be facing and a sliver of an approach lane to the green are all backed up by a mostly unplayable backstop that frames the hole beautifully but simultaneously reminds us that we should approach the rest of the day with severe humility.</p>
