<p><a href="https://www.mbn.com/courses/pine-lakes-country-club"><br>Pine Lakes Country Club</a>&nbsp;was Myrtle Beach’s first course, opening its fairways in 1927, setting the stage for the area’s emergence as golf’s most popular destination.</p>

<p>Nearly 90 courses now call the area home, but the Granddaddy still holds a special place in the market. If you have booked a tee time at PIne Lakes or even if you are still mulling your course options, here is a scouting report on the Robert White design.</p>

<p>– DO NOT make the decision on what tees you are going to play based solely on yardage. Pine Lakes is a par 70 and that needs to be taken into account. If you are a mid to high handicapper who mindlessly defaults to the No. 3 tees be warned: that is the longest 6,305 yards in Myrtle Beach.&nbsp;</p>

<p>– But I’m a 15 handicap and the No. 2 tees at 5,756 yards are too short for me, you say. Rubbish. That’s the equivalent of 6,000+ yards on a par 72. That might not be enough length but give the decision serious thought.&nbsp;</p>

<p>– Take advantage of the short par 4 opener because No. 2 is a testy par 3 while the third hole might be the toughest two-shotter on a layout full of them. Playing 408 yards from the No. 2 tees,&nbsp;water&nbsp;significantly tightens up the approach on No. 3 and runs through the right side of the green. Pro tip: drives that find the left side of the fairway are great preferred.&nbsp;</p>

<p>– Speaking of two-shotters, there isn’t a trio of consecutive par 4s tougher than holes 12-14 at Pine Lakes. The 12th is the “easiest,” playing 371 yards (all distances from No. 2 tees), but with water looming to the left of the green, trouble lurks. Holes 13 and 14 both stretch over 400 yards. With Myrtle Beach’s oceanfront hotels serving as a backdrop to its green, No. 14 is the course’s most photographed hole and one of its toughest.&nbsp;</p>

<p>– We’ve talked a lot about challenges but if you are playing from the No. 2 tees, the fifth hole, a 410-yard par 5, is one of the easiest birdies along the Myrtle Beach golf scene. A dogleg left, there is a chance to&nbsp;get aggressive with the tee shot, shaving distance and setting up an opportunity to reach the green in two. Anything worse than par here is a disappointment.&nbsp;</p>

<p>– The back nine features uncommon elevation change, adding to the fun. Holes 13, 14 and 15, in particular, are a roller coaster. With the prevailing wind coming off the nearby Atlantic, make sure you double check your distances.&nbsp;</p>

<p>&#8212; Pine Lakes is a second shot golf course. There is ample room off the tee but success will be determined by the quality of your iron game.&nbsp;</p>

<p>– Enjoy the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.mbn.com/courses/pine-lakes-country-club">Pine Lakes</a>&nbsp;clubhouse and the Myrtle Beach Golf Hall of Fame, located in a courtyard behind the historic clubhouse. There is memorabilia on the wall commemorating the course’s role as the birthplace of Sports Illustrated, the vibe is good, and the food is outstanding. It’s an ideal way to end a round.&nbsp;</p>
