Take a course with renowned repeat play, add top-of-the-line greens and sprinkle in some bunker renovation and all you get is everyday bliss.
Welcome to the new <a href="https://www.mbn.com/courses/myrtlewood-golf-club-palmetto">Palmetto Course at Myrtlewood Golf Club</a>.
The central Grand Strand layout has bolstered its already impressive tee sheets by implementing a generational project worthy of the investment. Players are seeing improved playability on a track that already had plenty with smoother putting surfaces atop Sunday Bermudagrass, more strategic bunker placement and more distinct lines of sight.
Architect Dan Schlegel’s revitalization project from 2019 has had time to pop, yes, but it’s also had time to attract. In the time since, here are four holes where players have reaped serious benefits.
NO. 6
The old, oblong greenside bunker on this hole wasn’t an eyesore, necessarily. But it did draw you away from the target. The reshaped version is much smaller. More importantly, it serves as more of a mirror to the shape of the green and fades into the background some. Your eye won’t be pulled to the left, allowing you to focus on the stick.
NO. 9
Cutting one large bunker into two smaller ones that were roughly one-half of the total sand area means players have some leniency while hitting into the green if they fall short. Just as important was that the lip of the greenside edge of that original bunker is no longer there after years of overgrowth and mowing difficulties. Obviously, you don’t want to plunk down, but if you do, it’s not ballgame.

One of the easiest holes on the entire course just got even more score-happy. The Sunday here means anyone who reaches in three is going to have a realistic shot at par, while anyone on in regulation is putting for birdie. The trouble spot (a small patch of water up the right of the fairway) is still there. But this relatively attackable green is now ripe for some post-round bragging.
NO. 18
If you’re rocking and rolling on any course, the last thing you want to do is get to its signature hole and clunk around a green. The addition of Sunday on No. 18 is where you may see the ultimate dividends. This hole playing parallel to the Intracoastal Waterway, is reachable in two for many players, and knocking in a birdie with that backdrop could be the cherry on top.(pictured right)
