MURRELLS INLET | <a href="http://www.mbn.com/courses/blackmoor-golf-club">Blackmoor Golf Club</a> near Myrtle Beach has benefited from its association with the esteemed Waccamaw Golf Trail.
Still, the Gary Player design continues to succeed on its own.
Midway through its third decade, the northern-most course on the 11-club trail has established itself as not only one of the top-rated courses on South Carolina’s Grand Strand. It also, without pun intended, has found ways to remain one of its most player-friendly.
Blackmoor officials recently thinned out some overzealous tree lines that used to gobble up golf balls by the dozens. That doesn’t mean Player’s design has transformed into snoozer.
In fact, it’s anything but.
Making your way through the par-72 round is significantly easier if you have some variety in your bag, especially with the long irons. Some pop with the driver can help in a limited capacity, but it won’t be enough. That’s because eight doglegs, including five on the back nine, cut down the distance that most would chew up with the driver.
In total, Blackmoor chimes in at 6,600 yards from the back tees. The length is trimmed to 6,200 from the whites, 5,770 from the golds and 4,800 from the reds.
Ignoring that distance, even on the rare cart-path only days, isn’t difficult.
Blackmoor has a terrain most would expect from a course that backs up to the Waccamaw River. Spots of Knee-high natural grasses accompany marsh zones on six holes. Water then directly affects shot selection on five more.
Add in a touch of elevation changes, primarily through some fairway mounding, and this course won’t necessarily appeal to the mashers.
As Blackmoor’s popularity shows, though, the course does more than enough to appeal to everyone else.

No. 8, Blackmoor’s signature hole, offers players two options off the tee. Either take the relatively safe path to the left, navigating a dogleg right that stretches to as far as 370 yards from the back tees. Or, if you’re feeling up to the challenge, go straight at the hole via a slim corridor with thick grass and visually deceptive undulation. That trek is only 270 yards, but any tee shot left or right of center or a short tee shot leaves you wishing you had done something different. &#8211; Ian Guerin
