<p>When people think of golf course history, minds often turn to competitive events and architects who require only one name to catch your attention, but a rich history can take many forms, and that’s certainly the case for <a href="https://www.mbn.com/course/myrtlewood-golf-club-pinehills">Myrtlewood’s PineHills Course</a>.</p>

<p>The layout has enjoyed three names and two completely different designs in its 58 years. If that sounds confusing, read on, and it will make sense as you get to know the story behind one of Myrtle Beach’s most popular designs.</p>

<p>– Myrtle Beach Farms was in the process of building what would become the Grand Strand’s fourth course in 1966 and company officials whittled the list of possible names to two, including Idlewild (seriously), before eventually deciding neither would work.</p>

<p>With their internal efforts having failed, Myrtle Beach Farms executives took a more populist approach to naming the new course, launching a contest called ‘Label the Links.’ Area residents and visitors alike had a month to submit their ideas.</p>

<p>After reviewing the submissions, the name chosen for the new layout, which opened in October of 1966, was Myrtlewood.</p>

<p>– Mrs. Lonnie Moore submitted the winning idea and she was awarded $150 for her creativity. As an aside, $150 in 1966 is the equivalent of $1,400 today, an absolute steal because the name, nearly 6 decades later, is immediately recognizable to nearly every Myrtle Beach golfer. Try finding an advertising agency that will work for that cheap!</p>

<p>– I know what you are thinking, “Myrtlewood is the name of the club, not the course.” That wasn’t the case until the <a href="https://www.mbn.com/course/myrtlewood-golf-club-palmetto">Palmetto Course</a> opened in 1973, and what was once the Myrtlewood layout was renamed the Pines Course.</p>
</div>

<p>– George Cobb was the original architect of the Pines Course, and the total cost of design and construction were $300,000.</p>

<p>– In 1993, under the ownership of Burroughs &amp; Chapin, architect Arthur Hills was contracted to completely redesign the course with the only real similarity between the two layouts being the routing. Hills raised greens and added mounding, moving more than ½-million tons of dirt during construction. He also expanded the water hazards on 10 holes, enhancing the challenge and the course’s visuals.</p>

<p>-With a new layout came a new name: PineHills, a tribute to the course&#8217;s history and the architect whose vision modernized its design.</p>

<p>The next steps in the evolution of PineHills were taken in 2018 when the course’s greens were restored to the size and specifications of Hills’ original design. The installation of Sunday bermudagrass followed up with new bunkers in 2024, were both resounding successes.</p>
