<p>On the best of days, golf is a game fraught with danger. One bad swing and water that otherwise appears to be a nonfactor becomes the final resting place of your new TaylorMade TP5.</p>

<p>There is no such thing as an easy course when you are swinging the club as if you couldn&#8217;t distinguish a lob wedge from a Louisville Slugger, but some layouts are more forgiving than others. There are few guys along the Grand Strand who know where to go in search of a design that offers a chance to score like my main man Ian Guerin.</p>

<p>So, Ian, if you are looking for a course that gives you a chance to go low, where are you going?</p>

<p>Ian Guerin: I believe you just said I’m a bad golfer. And while you would be right… OK, look, I have been way out of the loop when it comes to improving my game of late. But when I need a pick-me-up, it’s straight to the <a href="https://www.mbn.com/course/myrtle-beach-national-west-course">West Course at Myrtle Beach National</a>. From the forgiving Par 5 opener to all those mostly straight Par 4s to the soft Par 3s, this Arnold Palmer design is sort of my jam. <em>(West Course 15th top photo)</em></p>

<p>Chris King: No need to be sensitive. I was merely pointing out that you enjoy the opportunity to post a score you are proud to tell the boys about after the round! To your point, if you can&#8217;t go low at the West Course, the only person to blame is the one you see when looking into the mirror. Just across the state line, <a href="https://www.mbn.com/course/meadowlands-golf-club">Meadowlands Golf Club</a> also provides a player-friendly layout. It&#8217;s just under 6,100 yards from the Egret tees and there isn&#8217;t a lot of trouble. I haven&#8217;t been up there in a while, but I&#8217;ve heard Meadowlands has been in outstanding condition so that&#8217;s always a bonus as well.</p>

<p>IG: I can back that up, as I went by there in a non-playing capacity not too long ago. The grass was as green as you’d ever expect for that time of year and it wasn’t because of spray paint. That playing surface, combined with wide landing zones and plenty of forgiving space to the left and right means one mistake doesn’t automatically become two..</p>

<p>CK: Another place I like to go if the ego needs a little massaging is <a href="https://www.mbn.com/course/the-wizard-golf">The Wizard</a>. It&#8217;s a links style design with a lot of landing room and receptive greens. That being said the final three holes finish along water so you will want to be careful at the finish.</p>

<p>IG: Was really wondering if you were going to bring up The Wizard after our recent discussion about 16 and 17 there. As beautiful as those are, I tend to try to avoid the overwhelming wet stuff when I’m in my own head. If I’m up north, the likes of Beachwood or Azalea Sands can usually do the trick. Down south, I’m a sucker for Tradition Golf Club. Besides the two island greens, impactful water is kept to a minimum throughout there.</p>

It&#8217;s home to 27 holes and no matter which combination you play, the Dan Maples design provides opportunities for everyone to score.</p>

<p>IG: You’re a sucker for Maples golf, clearly, and I’m totally OK with that. He threaded the needle between creativity and playability maybe as much as any designer who has attached his name to Grand Strand golf.</p>
