<p>– Start fast. The Open nine begins with a replica of the first hole at St. Andrews, meaning your opening tee shot is to a fairway that is more than 100 yards wide. The 360-yard hole (all distances from the 6,200-yard back tees), which plays to a flat green, is begging you to start par or better. <em>(pictured right)</em></p>

<p>– While the first green on the opening nine is relatively benign, the putting complexes are, as a rule, challenging, which isn’t a surprise given the source of the layout’s inspiration. So, don’t get greedy. Play to the middle of the green. Case in point is the island green third hole on the Open Nine that was inspired by TPC Sawgrass. When the flag is cut behind the bunker on the right, it’s very difficult to hold the green because the putting surface runs toward the water. Playing to the middle, in an attempt to make par, is a recipe for success.&nbsp;</p>

<p>– Enjoy the par 5s, especially the 5th hole on the Open Nine, a 492-yard three-shotter inspired by a similar hole at English Turn in New Orleans. The hole is fraught with danger thanks to a pond running along the right side and an approach to an island green that will tighten the collar of your shirt. It’s great fun. <em>(pictured right)</em></p>

<p>– What can you expect from Amen Corner, the course’s most popular stretch? The simple answer is a good time. Amen Corner is on the Championship Nine (holes 4 through 6), and the water that ended Ludwig Aberg’s dreams of Masters title short left of the green on 11 is there. The hole that replicates Augusta’s par 3, 12th is full of danger, and the best of the bunch is the par 5 the emulates No. 13, a great risk-reward par 5. Setting aside the connection to Augusta, this is arguably World Tour’s best three-hole stretch.</p>
