Sure, Wild Wing Golf Plantation is no longer the four-course mega site it used to be. However, with the remaining Avocet 18 and the Hummingbird nine, the course has found that an advantage is the closures truly did exist.
“Once you get out on the course, it’s like a reserve. There’s no housing. You’re out in the middle of nature,” General Manager Rick Schultz said. “You have a lot of unique holes with mounding. You’re surrounded by wildlife. There are a lot of holes where you don’t see a lot of other people. You kind of forget you’re in Myrtle Beach.”
What isn’t lost, be it a standard round on the Avocet or adding in the Hummingbird for a full 27 holes, is a no-frills approach to the game accompanied by some pristine surfaces capable of hosting tournament play. The eye-popping No. 15 encapsulates that in a single hole. The final par five of the day includes three bunkers hugging the edges of a fairway that eventually leads into a pond while oversized pines line the extended deep rough.
