Recently, LPGA instructor &amp; 2014 Mrs. South Carolina America Meredith Kirk dropped in on Meadowlands Golf Club to visit head pro Jason Monahan, who showed Meredith the prominent features of one of its newly renovated holes. This video showcases the new player-friendly features of the par-4 3rd hole on this North Strand golf course, in Calabash, NC.
Meredith: So, Jason, we&#8217;re standing here on Hole No. 3. We&#8217;re going to play the middle tees today. Tell me a little bit about the changes that this hole has undergone since 2012.
Jason: What we&#8217;ve done out here, Meredith, is we&#8217;ve tried to make the hole a lot more player-friendly. In doing so we have decreased the size of our second water hazard, giving the player more landing area in the fairway.
As you can see when we begin to play the hole, you have to carry your first body of water, which is not all that difficult. It was the second body of water, that you&#8217;ll see as we begin, that was the challenge. Players were faced with an all-water carry from about 150 yards into the green. So by reducing the size of that body of water, the players now only need to carry about 100 yards to reach the green &#8211; and, once again, we have added significantly more landing area for the player to get closer, making it much more player-friendly.
Meredith: So no more &#8220;double trouble,&#8221; right?
Jason: No more &#8220;double trouble.&#8221; &#8220;Airborne &amp; forward,&#8221; and you should be clear.
Meredith: Great &#8211; so, let&#8217;s go try this!

Jason: OK, Meredith, so as you can see here, we&#8217;re on our second shot on Hole 3. Actually, there&#8217;s a good look here on what we&#8217;ve done to make this hole more player-friendly. Across the way you can see (part of) the old cart path. That used to come clear across the fairway, and you only had about an additional 8 yards of rough before you were in the water. We&#8217;ve cut that out, and we&#8217;ve extended this fairway all the way down to where you can see the water is now. We&#8217;ve also opened up more fairway to the right. So now you have much more landing area, and it gives a golfer a chance to get much closer to the green, so they&#8217;re not forced to carry the ball such a distance … making it much more enjoyable.
